Hair Loss and Hair Transplant: Medical Solutions to Restore Your Confidence

Hair loss is one of the most common concerns in aesthetic medicine. It is not only a cosmetic issue – for many patients it deeply affects confidence and self-esteem.

In my medical practice, I see people every day who are worried because their hair looks thinner, their hairline is receding, or they notice areas with little or no hair. The important thing is this: there are effective medical treatments that can stop hair loss and, in advanced cases, restore lost hair through a hair transplant.

Why does hair loss occur?

The most common causes include:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (hereditary): the most frequent cause in both men and women
  • Hormonal changes: pregnancy, menopause, thyroid disorders
  • Physical or emotional stress: may trigger telogen effluvium
  • Nutritional deficiencies: lack of iron, vitamins or protein
  • Scalp conditions: seborrheic dermatitis, infections or inflammation
  • External factors: pollution, smoking, harsh hair products

A personalised medical diagnosis is always the first essential step.

Medical treatments for hair loss

Before recommending a hair transplant, we evaluate other options:

  • Mesotherapy: vitamins and active ingredients injected directly into the scalp
  • PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma): stimulates regeneration and strengthens existing follicles
  • Topical and oral treatments: such as minoxidil or finasteride in selected patients

These treatments help slow hair loss and improve hair quality.

Hair transplant – the definitive solution

When the hair loss is advanced and medical treatments are not sufficient, a hair transplant is the best option.

We use the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) technique, which involves:

  1. Extracting individual follicles from the donor area (usually the nape)
  2. Implanting them one by one into the thinning areas
  3. The transplanted hair grows naturally and permanently

Deciding on a hair transplant is a significant step and usually follows extensive research.

Frequently asked questions about hair transplantation

Is a hair transplant very painful?

Understandably, many think a procedure involving the scalp must hurt. In reality, a FUE transplant is performed under local anaesthesia. Both donor and recipient areas are completely numb. During the procedure, patients feel no pain – only slight pressure or sensations. Afterwards, mild discomfort or tightness may occur, easily managed with standard painkillers. Most patients say it was far easier than expected.

How long does the surgery take?

The duration of the procedure depends directly on the number of follicular units that need to be transplanted. In this case, a session lasts between 4 and 8 hours. The phases are carefully performed: first, the extraction of the follicles from the donor area (usually the nape), and then the implantation one by one in the recipient area, respecting the natural direction and angle of the hair.

When will I see results?

A hair transplant requires patience, as the transplanted hair follows its natural growth cycle. During the first weeks, it is normal for some of the implanted hair to shed; this process is called “shock loss” and is part of the normal regeneration of the follicle.

From the third month onwards, the new hairs begin to grow progressively. Between the sixth and ninth month, the patient already notices a significant improvement in density and overall appearance. Finally, around the one-year mark, the results are fully visible: the hair looks strong, natural, and continues to grow permanently, just like the rest of the native hair.

It is important to note that results may vary from patient to patient, but with a well-performed transplant and proper aftercare, outcomes are generally very satisfactory and long-lasting.

Will the transplanted hair fall out again?

No. The follicles used in the transplant are extracted from the donor area—usually the nape and sides of the head—areas where the hair is genetically resistant to loss. This means that once implanted in the recipient area, they maintain this resistance and continue to grow naturally and permanently throughout life.

In the first months after surgery, temporary shedding of the newly implanted hair may occur. This is completely normal and not a cause for concern: the follicle remains intact under the skin and will later produce a new, stronger hair.

Therefore, the transplanted hair will not fall out again as a result of androgenetic alopecia. However, native (non-transplanted) hair may continue to weaken over the years, which is why treatments such as PRP or mesotherapy are often recommended to maintain overall density.

Does it require special aftercare?

Yes. As with any medical procedure, aftercare is essential to ensure correct healing and the success of the transplant. Fortunately, the care instructions are simple:

  • Gentle washing: During the first few days, hair should be washed gently with a mild shampoo recommended by the doctor. The implanted area should not be rubbed or scratched; washing is more of a gentle rinse to maintain hygiene without damaging the newly placed follicles.
  • Avoid friction and pressure: Do not wear tight caps, helmets, or hats during the first week to avoid disturbing the grafts. Sleeping on your back with your head slightly elevated also helps protect the area.
  • Avoid sun exposure and extreme heat: In the first weeks, avoid direct sun exposure, sauna, or solarium, as they may inflame the skin and interfere with healing.
  • Avoid intense physical activity: Activities that increase sweating or blood pressure should be postponed for 7–10 days to avoid affecting graft fixation.
  • Follow personalised medical guidelines: Each patient receives an individual plan that may include medication, lotions, or complementary treatments to support recovery and hair growth.

With these basic measures, most patients resume their normal activities quickly, and the grafts generally evolve well.
